Margam Castle - Port Talbot
Saturday 9th March 2019 - 9:00pm until 3:00am
Margam Castle has quickly gained a huge reputation as a haunted mansion, with it's grand gothic architecture, eerie derelict interior and numerous eye witness accounts. The number of reports of activity within the castle and it's grounds are astounding, from disembodied voices and poltergeist activity to full body apparitions.
The grounds around Margam Castle have been inhabited for over 4000 years, with artefacts dating back to the Iron age and Bronze age. Notably, the grounds held a religious significance during the 12th Century with the formation of a Norman monastery. The monastery existed until it was abolished by Henry VIII. Ruins of the monastery are still present within the grounds of Margam Park, with the ruins of the chapel on the side of Margam Mountain.
During the late 18th century, Margam Park was the site of major redevelopment, notably with the construction of the famous Orangery. In the early 19th century Christopher Rice Mansel Talbot began work on the castle, and construction was finished by 1840. The Talbot's lived in the Mansion until 1941 when it was sold to David Evans-Bevan. During the 1940's British and American soldiers were stationed at Margam Castle, with The American general Dwight Eisenhower visiting shortly before D-Day.
David Evans-Bevan never lived in the castle, he found it too large and the castle fell into disrepair. Evans-Bevan decided to sell the estate to Lord Heycock in 1973,, who began restorations. The local authority also owned the castle for a time, but it was not open to the public. Shortly after, in 1977, a fire ravaged the majority of the building.
